How Is Biking Good For My Health?

So I just had a great bike passed down to me; how awesome; cause I don't like rollerblading in the damp days of fall\winter if there are leaves on the ground, as i't just too dangerous of a risk to slip.  It's been a while since I've taken a bike out for a spin and I must say it was awesome!  A great way to get place from place without expensing on petro AND it's good for the environment... and the user!   This got me thinking as to exactly what the health benefits of cycling was; so I looked it up and here's what I found!

Immune System Strengthening- moderate activities strengthens the immune system and contributes to a healthy life.

Muscle Stimulation- Did you know that 1 week of inactiviy can reduces the strength of the muscular system by 50%?... holly crap!

The Skeletal System- Exercise and the accompanying strain on the skeletal system actually strengthens and increases mobility.

Spinal Diseases and Back Pain Improvement- Because of the good posture when cycling, the movement produced in the legs and the small muscles of the back that are strengthened.

Joint Protection- getting the synovial fluid in your joins flowing is always a good thing as this helps prevent injury.  And because the bike is supporting the body, force on the on the joints due to weight is reduced.

Stress Reduction- Due to the uniform cycling movement, this stabilizes the physical and emotional functions of the body; helping with anxiety, depression and other psychological problems. It also helps control hormonal balance.

Oxygen and Circulation Improvement- regular physical activity strengthens the respiratory muscles, which leads to improved ventilation of the lungs and thus has a positive effect on oxygen exchange.

Heart and Cardiovascular Diseases Prevention- All the risk factors that lead to a heart attack are reduced and regular cycling reduces the likelihood of heart attack by more than 50%.

Body Weight, Adiposity and Obesity Reduction- Cycling is ideal for targeting these problems as 70% of the body's weight is borne by the saddle, thus enabling people who could not otherwise move easily to exercise to increase their physical fitness and stimulate fat metabolism. Cycling also contributes to weight reduction by burning energy.

Body Fat and Hypercholesterol Reduction- Regualr cyclingTrains the body to burn fat reserves and changes cholesterol balance, favouring the protective kind as apposed to the bad.

Blood Pressure Regulation- Regular biking reduces high blood pressure as the heart rate  is lowered

Okay, so there are many more benefits, but i'm sure you get the idea.  I know I did. Next step... gotta buy a good helmet and gloves.

See you in the bike lane!

Namaste ~

PS ~ what a great inspiration when I walked out of my house this morning to see a whole fleet of cops cycling for cancer! way to go folks! xoxo
